- WheelChair Gardener: In 1995, I was shot by a 14-yr old boy who had entered my home while I worked in the side yard. He wanted money to go to McDonalds and found a handgun I kept for protection. He sought me out while I rested in the courtyard and shot me. I was paralyzed from the chest down and lay there for several hours before my brother happened to come by. He was about to leave, when he noticed a yellow iris blooming on the far side of the yard. He went to take a closer look and heard me calling to him from behind the privacy board fence. The iris saved me. I went to rehab and was able to return to work. By selling my car and funds donated, I was able to get a special rampvan that I could drive while in the wheelchair. I found a wonderful home that easily adapted to being wheelchair friendly. In addition, I have 1.9 acres. It would have been too much but not long after retiring I contacted a childhood friend and after a couple of years she passed away. Her husband and I became friends and he came to live with me and married me. Ed takes great care of me and this place here in Lower Alabama at Zone 8. He loves the place and is a gardener also.

ReplyDeleteSeems God has blessed me too by having you stop by my blog today and leave your comment. Thank you. You know how us bloggers like to have visitors that let us know they are visiting. I was reminded, once again, from reading your profile ( sounds criminal, doesn't it--- our profiles?!) we are all living our lives and growing through our own personal challenges. My heart and mind are in awe of what you survived. Your flowers are beautiful. I especially enjoyed seeing your beautiful Iris. My very favorite Aunt Loree had a beautiful Iris garden. She lived in S.C. and it seems there is just something about those Southern gardens --- I am sure it has something to do with the Southern women tending them. They tend to be beautiful people growing beautiful flowers. Tender thoughts-CeCe
